Budgerigar Parakeets make excellent pets. The male parakeet is more likely to talk than the female parakeet. The male parakeet will have a flesh-colored cere (where his nostrils are) if he is a young or fancy colored male, and the female will have a whitish or brown colored cere that indicates her age and breeding condition. ( White around nostrils is more common in younger birds, the mature female birds that are ready to breed have brown ceres. Juvenile parakeets also have stripes that extend from the cere to the top of the head in normal colored individuals that are about three months old or younger that fades as the adult plumage replaces the stripes with a solid color.
